贝斯卡兰

贝丝Y. 卡兰, MD, is an internationally recognized expert in ovarian cancer 和 other heritable cancers with a 30-year career as a physician 和 scientist. She is Vice Chair of Women's Health Research 和 professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the David Geffen 医学院 at UCLA, 和 currently serves as director of the UCLA Health Jonsson Comprehensive 癌症中心's Cancer Population Genetics program.

卡兰 earned her BA (magna cum laude) in biochemistry in 1978 from Harvard University, where she also earned her MD degree in Medicine in 1982. She complete her residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology (1986) 和 was a research fellow (1987) at Yale University. She joined the UCLA faculty as a clinical fellow in 1989; she rose to the rank of professor in 2001 和 was appointed Vice Chair in 2019.

A board-certified gynecologic oncologist 和 physician-scientist, 卡兰's research 和 clinical practice focus primarily on ovarian cancer 和 investigating pressing clinical 和 translational questions related to the disease. Her research seeks to underst和 the genetic 和 phenotypic determinants of ovarian cancer, hereditary predisposition to cancer, 和 molecular biomarkers for early detection, treatment 和 prognostication of ovarian cancer. In 1989 she established a human tissue biorepository that became one of the largest collections of fresh frozen tissue, 血清, 和 germline DNA with correlative data from women with ovarian 和 other gynecologic cancers. This resource has been widely used in many national 和 international translational research studies, including The Cancer Genome Atlas project (TCGA), Consortium of Investigators of Modifiers of BRCA1/2 (CIMBA) 和 Ovarian Cancer Association Consortium (OCAC).

卡兰 publishes extensively, 和 is Editor-in-Chief of her specialty's two pre-eminent journals 妇科肿瘤 和 妇科肿瘤 Reports. Her work has resulted in multiple federal 和 foundation funded research grants that have advanced our underst和ing of hereditary cancers related to BRCA1/2 mutations. She currently is a Co-PI on a large national project focused on a population-based genetic testing model of individuals at risk for BRCA1 和 BRCA2 mutations. In 1991, 卡兰's interest in inherited cancers led her to initiate the Gilda Radner Hereditary Cancer Program which over time has become a renowned resource providing data to help identify precursors to cancer, epidemiologic 和 lifestyle risk factors regarding cancer risk, 和 correlative specimens for biomarker identification for early detection. 更多的 recently 卡兰's translational interests have focused on contributions of the tumor microenvironment to ovarian cancer precursors 和 metastasis, as well as the roles of key molecular regulators driving cancer biology.

In addition to her leadership roles at UCLA, 卡兰 has served as president of the Society of 妇科肿瘤 和 is currently Chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance. She is a member of the National Academy of Medicine, an American Cancer Society 临床研究 Professor 和 a Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. She has provided congressional testimony advocating for federal support of ovarian cancer research 和 helped lead an effort that achieved passage of the Gynecologic Cancer 教育 和 Awareness Act of 2005 or “Johanna's Law.”  In 2012, 卡兰 was appointed by the White House to the National Cancer Advisory Board, 和 in 2019 she received the Giants of Cancer Care Award.
